The Parkinson Family’s Journey with Emily’s Star
Our Journey with Emily’s Star
For over eight years—possibly even longer—Emily’s Star has been an unwavering pillar of support for our family. It all began with a simple email asking for help. From that first home visit to assess our needs, they have been by our side ever since, making everything incredibly easy.
Meet William and Jack Parkinson
William and Jack are 22-year-old identical twins, both diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD). They are nonverbal and incontinent. William also has epilepsy, while Jack struggles with severe gastro issues, including acid reflux and irritable bowel syndrome. Both experience extreme anxiety, which makes day-to-day life challenging for our family.
A Charity That’s Always There
From the very start, contacting Emily’s Star has been effortless. They are approachable, responsive, and always ready to offer support. There isn’t a single thing I wouldn’t feel comfortable discussing with them. But their support extends far beyond just the charity itself—it’s a whole network of families coming together to help one another. For example, when I was in urgent need of large syringes for Jack, who wasn’t eating, I sent a message around 9 a.m., and by 10 a.m., multiple families had offered help, allowing me to collect what I needed.
More Than Just Support—A Lifeline
Knowing that Emily’s Star is always there has provided immense comfort. If my sons are hospitalised, I know help is available. If I need to vent or seek advice, I have a safe space. Years ago, getting the boys out of the house was vital, and Emily’s Star made that possible. School holidays were particularly tough, and managing two growing boys with complex needs alone felt impossible. Emily’s Star stepped in and ensured we weren’t confined to our home, helping us venture out, which, at that time, was truly life-saving.
The Joy of Social Inclusion
Today, one of the greatest gifts Emily’s Star provides is their fun and engaging adult activities. My boys love participating in social events that aren’t just with their parents or carers. Activities like the water park, rounders, bowling, and the amazing parties and discos bring them so much joy. When I first registered with Emily’s Star, it felt like a lifeline—an extra pair of caring hands for my boys and emotional support for me. Now, it’s become an essential part of their lives, helping them socialise and enjoy new experiences.
A Heartfelt Thank You
There is nothing I would change about Emily’s Star—it’s a fantastic charity that provides invaluable support to families like ours. From the bottom of our hearts, thank you for being there for us. We truly don’t know what we would have done without you. You have built a beautiful relationship with my boys, and they continue to have so much fun and social interaction thanks to you. It’s simply perfect.
